Organic cotton yarn has the same benefits as conventional cotton yarn without the harmful ecological side effects.

Conventional cotton production uses more harmful chemicals per acre than any other crop, including 16% of the world’s total pesticide use. Many pesticides used on cotton are known carcinogens, and workers in many cotton growing countries may not adequately trained in proper pesticide application, resulting in serious health problems over time. In addition to being very harmful for the environment and the health of workers, chemical residues can also remain in the processed yarn, causing skin irritation or other health problems for the consumer.

Conventional cotton production is also very water-intensive, yet cotton is frequently grown in semi-arid regions. This has contributed to growing water shortages in some areas, including the disappearance of the Aral Sea, which has been reduced to just 10% of its former water volume following diversion of the rivers that fed it for use as irrigation, mainly for cotton fields.

And that’s just the cotton production process. Conventional harvesting involves the use of defoliants to make picking easier, and the processing and spinning of harvested cotton is also a resource intensive process with many harsh chemical bleaches, dyes, and other agents that may be dangerous to the health of workers, consumers, and the environment.

Organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals, using sustainable agricultural practices that improve the soil and reduce water use, hand-picked without the use of chemical defoliants, and processed with non-toxic alternatives to the petroleum scours, silicon waxes, formaldehyde, anti-wrinkling agents, chlorine bleaches, and other chemicals applied to conventional cotton during the processing phase.

Like conventional cotton yarn, organic cotton yarn is soft, easy to work with, and stronger than wool. It does not have significant elasticity and may stretch out of shape over time.
